The Jets have mercifully pulled the plug on Mark Sanchez.

On Tuesday, hours after being eliminated from postseason contention, New York announced that Greg McElroy will start at quarterback in Week 16 versus the Chargers.

The move was first reported by the New York Daily News.

While now official, the news comes as a no brainer following Sanchez’s horrific outing against the Titans, in which he threw four interceptions and lost a fumble.

Earlier, a “prominent member of the organization” told the Daily News that “there’s no way” Sanchez is under center next Sunday.

As for Tim Tebow — because I know you’re wondering — the Jets’ coaching staff was reportedly worried about the potential ripple effect passing over Tebow for McElroy would cause.

There’s speculation that Tebow may still maintain Wildcat duties, but it’s clear the club doesn’t view him as a viable replacement for the ever-struggling Sanchez.

McElroy, who’s gone from inactive to starter overnight, relieved Sanchez in Week 13, “leading” the team to a 7-6 win over the Cardinals.

This will be the first career start for the former Alabama product. Unless he completely bombs, it likely won’t be his last.
