New Jets general manager John Idzik said Monday that Mark Sanchez will be pushed for the starting quarterback job, vowing to add competition.
While they’ve begun kicking tires on college prospects, Gang Green reportedly is looking in a whole other direction.
According to the Newark Star-Ledger, the Jets have had “some very exploratory, informal discussions” regarding JaMarcus Russell.
Russell, as most know, was the former No. 1 overall pick of the Raiders and generally is referred to as the league’s all-time biggest bust. Literally the biggest – at last check, he clocked in at 305 pounds.
After getting run out of Oakland, Russell took his millions of dollars and faded into obscurity for the better part of three years. That changed last week, when it was reported that he’s aiming to make a comeback by gauging his interest at next month’s NFL Combine.
It’s worth noting that the discussions took place after previous GM Mike Tannenbaum was fired. Also, New York was linked to Russell in the past, so the idea isn’t totally foreign to the organization.
Although forcing Sanchez to earn his keep is a no-brainer, they’d be better served just anointing him the starter now if this classifies as “competition.”
Sanchez may be bad, but Russell is that much worse.

ja fatso is done stick him with a fork!!!
As a Pats fan, I have one suggestion:
Do it! Do it!
What a joke. The Jets seem to try to get the worst QBs in the league to put behind
Sanchez…Probably in an effort to make him the unquestioned number 1 QB on the team. Unfortunately half of the offensive line could make a better QB than Sanchez too, so the jets should probably trade the Cowboys Mangold for Doug Free…
They need to leave this guy rite where he is on the couch cause he is nothing but a fat potato send revis or crom there in exchange for alex smith or even sanchez for the deal just don’t bring this nfl wanna bee here to ny
I had an opportunity to watch Jamarcus progress from a starting freshman quarterback in high school, to an outstanding quarterback at LSU, and then to an arguably mediocre quarterback (at best) with the Oakland Raiders. I’m willing to bet that Archie Manning would have persuaded Peyton or Eli Manning to opt out of the contract with the Oakland Raider’s Organization to be traded elsewhere, preferably to a team without so many issues. As I recall, the Oakland Raiders had an ex-offensive lineman (Hall of Famer head foot coach) with one of the worst offensive lines in the league. All Jarmarcus needs is the right mentoring to help him to continue to mature as a young man and quarterback. One of the most profound mentor he had in his life (his uncle Ray- Ray) died unexpectedly during his second season with the Raider’s organization. Hey, he didn’t have the luxury of having an Archie Manning (type) as a father, coach, or mentor. Let see how well he does with a second chance for success by allowing him use his God’s gifted talents to compete in the NFL. Hopefully, he has been through enough adversity to strengthen him to work harder to become a successful young man and gifted quarterback in the NFL.
I have to disagree about Jamarcus being that much worse than Sanchez. When Jamarcus was a Raider he had a really bad o-line a horrible offensive coordinator and Lane Kiffin as head coach give me a break. Time will tell what Jamarcus could do if he takes this seriously he had a ton of talent just no drive. Sanchez doesn’t have talent in fact I believe Tebow should have started at least he wins, even as an ugly throwing bad qb
The fact he hasn’t been in the league for over 3 years, shows his lack of want to play football. Hes happy with his 30 million.
As a Raider fan, I say, hell yea. I would like for him to play for Denver, San Diego, or KC too though.
