Delanie Walker lost out on the Lombardi Trophy, but that absolutely pales in comparison to his recent tragedy.

On Wednesday, the 49ers tight end tweeted that his aunt and uncle were killed by a drunk driver.

The worst part? It occurred mere hours after they witnessed their nephew play in the Super Bowl.

WWLTV.com reports a Houston woman, Nechole Thomas, was driving at a “high rate of speed” around 5:30 a.m. Monday morning when she struck a vehicle that had stopped on the shoulder. Both vehicles caught on fire.

Police say “impairment is suspected” for Thomas, 26, who escaped the wreck with minor injuries. She faces two counts of vehicular homicide, DWI and reckless operation, and is being held at a local correctional institution.

In incidents such as these, it’s important to remember that football still is just a game. Thoughts and prayers should be with Walker and his family in this difficult time.

What a horrific accident. May they both rest in peace and may your grieving family feel the comfort of our Lord in this dire time of need.
