Multiple sources tell Yahoo! Sports’ Jason Cole that the 49ers are “poised to make a run” at the Jets’ star cornerback. San Fran is among a “handful of teams” that have discussed trading for Revis, who day by day is inching his way out of the Big Apple.
During the Combine this past week, the Jets were reportedly “actively shopping” Revis, looking to stockpile draft picks and rebuild a barren roster.
Following Wednesday’s trade of Alex Smith, which becomes official on March 12, the Niners certainly have plenty of ammo.
Brandishing 12 picks (plus three more coming by way of the compensatory process), San Francisco owns two top-34 selections, both of which could go to New York for Revis.
Cole notes that if the 49ers acquire Revis, who’s coming off a torn ACL, they would not extend his contract. Instead, he’d play out the 2013 season and prove his health before landing his much-desired megadeal.
While the acquisition would be viewed as a one year trial, adding Revis to an already loaded Niners defense would instantly make them a favorite to earn a repeat trip to the Super Bowl.
