Former Jaguars assistant slams “Blame Gabbert”

From all indications, the Jaguars’ new ownership and staff believes Blaine Gabbert has what it takes to become their franchise quarterback.

That sort of optimism wasn’t shared by the previous regime.

A former Jags assistant told Yahoo Sports’ Michael Silver that Gabbert is known as “Blame Gabbert” around the team’s facility because “nothing’s ever his fault.”

Silver adds that there are “internal knocks on Gabbert’s intangibles (leadership, attitude, accountability),” as well as an ever-present skittish pocket presence.

In his two seasons with Jacksonville, Gabbert has continually displayed happy feet in the pocket, at times looking completely unsure of where to go with the football. Despite the Jaguars’ lack of offensive talent, his lack of growth — and apparent absence of responsibility — unsurprisingly wore thin within the organization.

Whether that notion remains true with new GM Dave Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley is unclear. But it’s not going to stop the club from exploring all their options, both in free agency and the draft.

“Don’t be surprised at anything we may or may not do,” a “high-ranking Jags source” told Silver. “There are no options off the table.”

Sitting with the No. 2 overall pick in next month’s draft, the Jaguars will have their share of options. Gabbert likely has his place among them, but, as we’ve seen so many times before, things can quickly change.

    Go back to Mizzou!

Wow, a fired coach seems to be the one blaming now! If you drop back in the pocket, get smashed or have to run for your life 75% of the time, you tend to get gun shy. When he had time and protection in college he looked like a star in the making. Maybe we should judge him now after he gets that time and protection needed by all successful QB’s.

The brothers Gabbert are a couple of prima donna babies.

  • Hey Jagfan and RJ,

Been There, why don’t you just defend Joey Harrington’s shortcomings while you’re at it. Gabbert is garbage, he could have the best o-line and receivers in the game and he’d still suck.
