Maurkice Pouncey tweets apology for ‘Free Hernandez’ hat

On Sunday, Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey raised a few eyebrows when a photo surfaced of him and his brother, Dolphins center Mike Pouncey, wearing “Free Hernandez” hats at a club.

Although he was college teammates with Aaron Hernandez, the former Pats tight end, Pouncey realized his mistake and apologized on his Twitter account Monday.

“I fully recognize the seriousness of the situation involving my former teammate,” Pouncey wrote. “And I regret that my actions appear to make light of that serious situation. I apologize to anyone who was offended by my actions.”

It was reported late Sunday that the Steelers would speak with Pouncey about his decision to wear the hat. It’s not a hugely serious issue, but him supporting an accused murderer doesn’t reflect particularly well on Pittsburgh’s zero tolerance organization.

A similar apology from his brother shouldn’t be far behind.
