Dustin Keller suffers gruesome knee injury (Photo)

As Dustin Keller can now attest to, football is an excruciatingly brutal business.

During the Dolphins’ preseason game against the Texans on Saturday night, the veteran tight end suffered a gruesome right knee injury, and had to be carted off the field.

The injury occurred after a short reception by Keller, whose knee bent back awkwardly and immediately gave out on a hit by Texans safety D.J. Swearinger. He was seen cursing on the turf in obvious pain.

It wasn’t a pretty scene.

Ouch. Double ouch.

While it’s too early to draw any conclusions — he’s undergoing an MRI tonight — it certainly appears that Keller is likely to miss extensive time. If an ACL or other ligaments were affected, it’ll cost him the season.

In any case, it’s a tough break for Keller, who signed a one-year contract with Miami this offseason, essentially betting on himself.

UPDATE: FOX Sports’ Alex Marvez confirms that Keller is done for the season.

I feel bad for Keller, but when I was growing up players didn’t get hurt as much as they do now. what’s up with that?
