Michael Vick hasn’t even been a Jet for three weeks, yet fan blowback is already in full swing.
An online petition on the website Change.org is pushing for Vick to be banned from the campus of SUNY Cortland, site of Gang Green’s training camp.
Created last month, the petition is addressed to SUNY Cortland president Erik J. Bitterbaum and, as of publication time, has received more than 1,500 signatures.
The petition page features a picture of a mauled dog next to a photo of Vick, who signed with the Jets on March 21, and refers to the veteran quarterback as a “sociopath,” stemming from his 2007 conviction for dog fighting.
“I love SUNY Cortland, and cannot abide welcoming this sociopath onto our campus with open arms. We need to stand by what is right as a university by barring him from the grounds. I don’t want him anywhere near my beloved college or community. We MUST send the message that we won’t be party to the torture of animals by conveniently forgetting what he has done. If we welcome Vick onto our campus, we are complicit in his crimes.”
SUNY Cortland, located in upstate New York, has hosted four of the last five Jets camps. It’s been reported — but not yet confirmed — that the team will return there this summer.
