Michael Vick announces he’ll wear No. 8 with Jets

New year, new team, new jersey number for Michael Vick.

On Sunday, the veteran quarterback took to his Instagram account to announce he’ll wear No. 8 with the Jets, writing, “I want to see everybody in there MV8 jerseys this year. I appreciate all the fans that helped. Fresh start..new me!”

The 2014 season will mark the first time — in the NFL or college — Vick will have not worn No. 7. The number has become so synonymous to the 33-year-old that he even started a clothing lined named V7. As far as the Jets are concerned, the digit belongs to incumbent starter Geno Smith.

Ever the man of the people, Vick, who was also considering No. 3, gauged the pulse of Jets nation on Twitter before making his decision.

Thanks to an erroneous TMZ report last month that claimed Vick wanted Smith’s No. 7, this became something of a story. Now, thankfully, it can officially be put to rest.
