You might’ve read that the Panthers were on the hook for money owed to veteran receiver Steve Smith, whom the team released in March.
You might’ve seen Smith, now with the Ravens, haul in an 80-yard touchdown in Baltimore’s Week 1 loss to the Bengals.
Combined, those facts led ProFootballTalk to tweet out the following on Sunday:
Panthers paid Steve Smith $3 million to leave instead of $7 million to keep him.

There’s only one problem with that: it’s not true. Take it from Mr. Smith himself.
"@ProFootballTalk: Panthers paid Steve Smith $3 million to leave instead of $7 million to keep him." actually I received $5 million
