Having entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, Chandler Catanzaro is making, in a relative sense, mere pennies.
The Cardinals kicker signed a three-year deal that will pay him $420,000 this season — the rookie minimum — and included just a $1,500 signing bonus.
That $1,500 is the only guaranteed money Catanzaro will receive over the life of the deal. And he already blew through it.
Did he treat himself to designer clothes? Gaudy jewelry? A luxury car (down payment)?
No, no, and no.
“I bought some headphones,” he said, via AZCentral.com. “That was kind of my big gift. That’s kind of the ratio between my signing bonus and some other guys’ — they get a car and I get headphones.”
Catanzaro is having a whale of a rookie campaign, connecting on 15-of-15 field goal attempts, a Cardinals franchise record. He also went 7-of-7 in the preseason, prompting the team to part ways with veteran kicker Jay Feely. That turned out to be a smart move.
If Catanzaro continues to show well, it won’t be long before he earns a more lucrative contract. At that point, he should splurge on something other than Beats By Dre.
(Just kidding, NFL. I mean Bose.)
