So, the Steelers are supposedly promising Roethlisberger that they'll take a tall WR early in the draft and Yahoo's latest mock has the Steelers selecting FSU WR, Kelvin Benjamin in the first round.

I have mixed thoughts on that because I think their priority needs to be on defense.  So many mocks have the Steelers drafting Notre Dame NT Louis Nix, which would help them get back to stopping the run and take some pressure off their aging defensive backs.

Although, if Benjamin can turn out to be a Megatron-type WR, then it would be interesting to see the combination of him with Brown and Wheaton.

Lon (Kansa City, Mo.): I'm a transplanted 'Burgh boy living in Kansas City. My wife was pregnant with my oldest son when the Steelers drafted an undersized former QB from Georgia with their (compensatory) 3rd round round draft pick in 1998. Now, just days ago sitting here with my almost 14-year-old son watching Hines give his retirement speech...couldn't help but think how fast time flies when you're having fun. Thanks Hines for everything! We will miss your tough catches for first downs when we needed them most, your crushing blocks that had linebackers complaining about rough treatment from WRs, and above all, your smile! You're the consummate football player, pro, and thankfully, Steeler for life! Black and Gold forever!

Nick (Cleveland): As a Browns fan, my memories of Hines Ward will always be his [expletive] smile. There were so many times I wish someone on my beloved Browns could slap it off his face, but we never did. Now that he is retired, I can see myself always referring back to that smile. He was one of the greatest complete wide receivers I had the displeaure of watching bury my Browns year after year in his storied career. Glad to see him go out on a high note. Take care Hines! IMO, a sure fire Hall of Famer.

The Steelers like to draft BPA and favour proven players in college, correct? If these things are true, there's no way Benjamin will be the pick. 1) He isn't a polished receiver, 2) his combine numbers have been pretty underwhelming, so he doesn't even qualify for the raw-with-huge-upside camp, 3) just as a by-the-way, I question his motor on the field.

Nix is a possibility, as is Gilbert, Dennard, Mosley, Evans, and probably a whole lot of other players that have slipped my mind. I just don't see Benjamin being a good value pick. I wouldn't be surprised if he fell out of the first round altogether.

I heard an interview with Kevin Colbert who said the organization has decided to change it's philosophy a bit. and the fact that the more passing attempts means less and less snaps for a NT on the field.  I don't think they draft Nix.   I'd have no problem with them taking Benjamin if there isn't a playmaker on DF availabe when they pick.

So, we're still counting on Marcus Wheaton to step up into the #2 WR role.  I still don't understand how he gets to be a starter based on his track record of dropping passes.
