Yeah, I just posted this in the NFL section. Ban me if you dare mod that doesn't exist!!

So, any chance a mid major has a shot at being a bigger story over the next couple weeks than that crazy ass dad of the UCLA kid?

Any sleeper teams/players that might be fun to watch?

I don't think there are any truly great teams in this tournament which does open the door for a mid-major to make the final four or at least the elite eight.  According to my bracket, Sean Miller and the Arizona Wildcats will be cutting down the nets at the end of this tournament.

I am a big fan of SMU this year. (Don't get me wrong, I still love K-state and am THRILLED that they got in, but I don't have any illusions of them going all they way, They are fully capable of upsetting just about anyone, but not multiple games in a row)

Semi Ojeleye at SMU is from my hometown. I watched him win my high school a state title a few years back, so I'm a BIG fan. I vote for them to make a run at it!!!!

You all should have a tournament to convince me that college basketball is not one of the most overrated sports in the country

Birdman makes a good point.  Without the tournament and the March Madness bracket which recruits the marginal and non-sports fans for a month to fill out their brackets knowing that they have just a good of a chance of winning the poll as anyone, over rates college basketball.  Without March Madness, NCAA basketball is a fringe sport like tennis.

Snowmobile racing is a "fringe sport"; drone racing (yes...there's an actual pro league) is a "fringe" sport if a sport at all. Sports that are attended by millions of people are not fringe sports. Over 27 million people attended NCAA Division 1 basketball games last year (D1 schools including the tourney which had attendance of 700K by itself). There's nothing fringe about that number. I couldn't find the 2016 numbers for D1 football but in 2015 43,5 million attended their games (also including bowls/playoffs). Again, nothing fringe there. I couldn't find a compiled number for 2016 D1 hockey but did the math on the 2017 season and 3.5 million have attended so far. It's the most regional so I would expect it to be more niche than mainstream although AZ State is now D1 and a lot of players are coming out of CA (Gretzky affect). That said I wouldn't recommend starting a conversation with someone from North Dakota or Wisconsin with "nice fringe sport you got there." No Dak averages 11.5k and Wisco averages over 10k per game. Hell, even my alma mater averages over 5500 per game and we're competing for attention units with six other D1 programs within an hours ride.

I hate college sports snobs and this region is full of them. Hypocritically, they'll fawn over college sports when a team gets on the national stage like BC football in the Flutie days or UMASS hoops in the Camby days. I do not waste my time and precious money attending pro sports anymore; they're made for TV. I'll gladly attend AHL, minor league baseball, or college hockey games because I get bang for my buck. The venues are all family friendly with respect to prices, promotions, etc. Now some parents attending my alma maters hockey games might disagree with the family friendly part as our tradition involves chanting "who cares...you suck" after each opposing player is announced at the start of the game. ;)

  Stop hating on college sports.

Now that my favorite team fired Jamie Dixon and hired a garbage head coach, they didn't even make the NIT, let alone the NCAA.  At least Pitt, with Dixon would crack the top 10 here and there and get relatively high seeds in the NCAA.  Their problem was not playing good enough competition outside of their conference.  Now, they just flat out suck, which kills my motivation to pay even the slightest attention to the NCAAM.

Lon (Kansa City, Mo.): I'm a transplanted 'Burgh boy living in Kansas City. My wife was pregnant with my oldest son when the Steelers drafted an undersized former QB from Georgia with their (compensatory) 3rd round round draft pick in 1998. Now, just days ago sitting here with my almost 14-year-old son watching Hines give his retirement speech...couldn't help but think how fast time flies when you're having fun. Thanks Hines for everything! We will miss your tough catches for first downs when we needed them most, your crushing blocks that had linebackers complaining about rough treatment from WRs, and above all, your smile! You're the consummate football player, pro, and thankfully, Steeler for life! Black and Gold forever!

Nick (Cleveland): As a Browns fan, my memories of Hines Ward will always be his [expletive] smile. There were so many times I wish someone on my beloved Browns could slap it off his face, but we never did. Now that he is retired, I can see myself always referring back to that smile. He was one of the greatest complete wide receivers I had the displeaure of watching bury my Browns year after year in his storied career. Glad to see him go out on a high note. Take care Hines! IMO, a sure fire Hall of Famer.

I mean basketball isn't football....what other sport is better besides football . And yeah, the Tournament is the sport at the college level to a degree but the dance isn't overrated.

Can't really say well take out the tournament and then judge it. Take out the NFL playoffs of the NFL and it blows too.

Kind of like how the rest of the world feels about the Patriots, huh?

Basketball is ok. College basketball is throw up bad. If every Boston team I root for is on an equal field I'd rank the sports as:

1. NFL

2. NBA

3. NHL

4. College FB

5. MLB

6. MLS

7. College Basketball

8. College Baseball

You fail before you even start because you consider baseball a sport...

There...see how stupidly subjective this argument is if you use anything other than spectator numbers?

And as asp pointed out..the numbers also say your dog won't hunt

oh and Boon...Duke?...Duke who?..Bwahahahaha!! ;)

Dear Ben,

Hope you are doing well. I just wanted to let you know the Gamecocks still suck.

Best regards,

Cats

PS. I saw Hootie on TV crying. That is what the world thinks of your school. They hear Gamecocks and they think Hootie and the Blowfish. The Blowfish are the greatest thing SC has ever done (please note I correctly left the U out of SC)

PPS. I will still pull for them because no one else deserves a title left and they have the standard underdog appeal at this point. But they still suck
